We would like to give a big hug and thank you for everything Bonita and her family has done for ours. We were the lucky family chosen to bring home Angus from their 2011 Litter!! From the very moment we got the email saying we had made it to the short list till the time we brought our boy home, and even in the weeks to follow, we have never once doubted how much love and devotion are put into these furkids. We owe you guys so much and we could never say thank you enough. And it's not simply the fact that you get to come home with such a well trained puppy that's knows how to potty outside and go to their crate when told. You get to bring home another family member that knows how to come into an already established home, and brings with them all the love and devotion that is ingrained in them from the moment they are born. Every ounce of love that is given to these pups, from the oldest member of the family, down to the youngest, shows through in their personality. We could have never imagined that our home would be lucky enough to actually get a Bwana pup, let alone Bwana's Against the Odds. But here we are, and we look at our amazing Angus and his big brother Hootch, and couldn't imagine things any other way. Angus has brought a new spark to our family and we are so excited for the adventures to come. And we look forward to a lifetime relationship with our Bwana family.
Lots of Love and kisses ya'lls way...The Cowan's

HI and welcome to the world of Ridgebacks ! We do not allow our puppies to go home before 10 weeks , since there is a great deal of training the breeder should be doing in that last 2 weeks. What your pup is doing is not "abnormal" how ever the way in which you are correcting him is not optimal. It might get the message through but more likely will simply teach him to push your buttons until he gets what he wants which at this age is often food. ( Although most RRs will be happy to eat when ever they can at any age) . The pushing or holding him on the floor is a Dominance training technique. It might work on some breeds but not our goofy hounds. If you would like to begin an email conversation I will be happy to help with the training your little boy needs. They are wicked smart dogs and you really do need to learn how to train him ASAP. just email me at my home address and we can begin this weekend. And have your wife read my Breeder's Tale page about the number of times Ridgebacks have literally rescued family and friends. Then she will understand why you are drawn to this gorgeous breed. I will be on line a great deal today working on websites so a quick response is likely. email me at bwanasrrs@aol.com , we can begin getting your family member on the right track!

We have a 9 week old RR that is extremely thoughtful (most of the time) and loving, but, and here comes the new owner alarmed part, he has a routine of being the calmest dog that we exercise and play with 2-3 times per day and "poof" around some time in the afternoon, he loses his head. He starts pulling at the carpet, jumping and snapping at you, corrected and he starts to snap at you and growl. We put our hands on his back and put him down to the floor and state "No bark" or "No growl" and he tries to get away and snap at you while still growling and snapping. He will then jump at you and run. He act like a puppy possessed. And my wife looks at me like to say "Why do you like this breed...they are dangerous". I have found that after he eats he is much calmer and sweeter...but I don't know if I am doing the right things to teach this puppy manners. Sometimes, I think we are correcting him wrong and he is going to start to shy away from us or hate us. Can anyone help with information or techniques? Also, can anyone tell me if this is normal and it will change? The puppy was not trained prior to us getting it this last week. I just dont want to ruin a perfectly good family member.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your website and looking through your pics. I would love to receive a puppy application, but the email keeps coming back to me. I would also consider a young rescue dog.

HI Imagineme, Thank you for your kind words about our site. While it certainly is not a pro design, it does try to answer our most frequently asked questions. I am sorry you are having trouble getting in touch with us, please e mail me me at our home address bwanasrrs@aol.com , include your mailing address and I will pop an application in the mail. A Rescue dog is a wonderful opportunity for you to consider. A "Re~cycled" Ridgeback is carefully vetted and checked to assure as few surprizes as you could hope for. If you check our RescueOrganizations Page I am sure you will find more than one young RR just praying for a chance at a forever home. Due to the economy and unfortunately sometimes to another Breeder's bad luck in choosing a home there are often great dogs looking for that second chance that the right home would never regret! A Ridgeback is often a most forgiving Hound. Our Rescue Organizations work tirelessly at training and fostering Ridgebacks who may have been owner surrendered or pulled from a shelter. Bob and I donate as much time and money as we are able to support their honorable efforts. So Please check with them just in case your future Furchild is already out there waiting for you to find them. Their hearts may have been bruised or broken at some point , but they are still the strong hearts of the Lion Dogs of Africa, dedicated and proud awaiting that perfect fit. There is great Honor in adding Rescue RR to your home. Should you not find that dream dog, then by all means submit an application and we will do our best to help you find the puppy that you dream about. Sincerely, Bonita of Bwana

Dance - Bwana Boma's Dancing In My Dreams - was Best Puppy at the Mensona Show in Santa Rosa, CA. She went to the RRCUS Nat'l Specialty in Ventura, CA and placed 4th of 24 six to nine month bitches in Sweepstakes. Mom (that would be me) got a ribbon for "Senior handling". Lots of fun at Nat'ls. I've only taken 2 bitches to Nat'ls and both were Bwana pups. (Linda Winford of Southridge handled them both for me - thank you SO much, Linda!) Song, 6 yrs old, is now Am/Int'l Ch Bwana's Gentlesong OfTheBoma, CGC, TT, HIC. Dance, at 7 months, is just beginning her show career. Our 10 yr old Cruiser is a therapy dog - Int'l Ch Bwana's Country Roads, CGC, TT, AAT. Almost forgot that at the Utah Nat'l Specialty, Cruiser took a 4th place in altered dog class. We are SO proud of our Bwana pups. (Also very much love Annie - Int'l Ch Southridge Deloris at M'kubwa) Huge thanks to Bonita and Bob for getting us started way back on 9/11/2001 when they delivered Cruiser to us! (Yes, some very good things also happened that day.)

Bonita, I am the current owner of Hanalei, but you know her as "Priscilla of Gulfport." I adopted her from the Bowles' in 2008. I have the photo book you put together for them and it's a wonderful memory of where she had been and how far she has come. Hana is definitely a special needs animal and I've invested a lot of time, training, and money into her... but I know she came into my life for a reason. She has made me a stronger person and I love her.

Just wanted to say thank you for saving her life.

I am one of the lucky ones who have been chosen to bring home a Bwana puppy, I named Bailey. Thank you bwana kennel for making this such a special experience. It was so amazing to be able to be involved in her life before the time of her coming home. The high light of my week was the weekly email updates! The pics every few days on your facebook carried me through the rest of the week.
Then the time for her to come home wow I don't even know how to describe that it was the best! Ten weeks is a long time and I didn't understand completely why you kept the puppies that long till she came home. For one thing she is all but completly potty trained so far one accident and that was me not paying attention. And also I have started puppy training classes and everyone in the class was stunned that my puppy was so well behaved and was able to perform the first two lessons so far perfect like she has been doing this stuff for years! Everyone wanted to know what kind of dog she was and I told them that she was a RR and that they are very smart dogs but that Bailey came from a breeder who cared and loved her puppies like she was keeping them all for herself. Bonita you have made a difference in the world of breeding and the students in our class are all jealous that their breeder wasn't like you. Right now they are struggling with their puppies while I am enjoying mine! Everywhere I have gone people have commented about you even my vet said "this woman really loved these puppies I have never seen a book sent home with a puppy like this.It has information that alot breeders don't have a clue about and she has everything marked, typed and even with beautiful pictures. It is unbelievable!" Everyone is amazed that their is someone like you out there breeding these beautiful smart puppies!
I believe with all my heart that after my long time companion Sissy passed away God sent me to your web site to find Bailey and meet you and your family. You not only picked the perfect pup for me but also helped me fill a very sad empty spot in my heart. Bailey has brought back the laughter to my home.
Thank you and we love you guys so much! Olivia

Bonita & Bob plus family...

Thank you so very much for inviting me to your home to visit your pack! It is very evident that you and your family put alot of passion into raising your Ridgebacks!

My ony regret is that I couldnt take one home with me right then and there! However, I will be anxious to be on the "list" for the next litter!

Once again, thank you for your hospitality and I look forward to being friends!

Kindest regards,

Tim Fowler
